The black Ghana disk beads is unique to Africa and the process of making them has been used for over 1000 years. The Ghanaians have been making these beads since the 1600's pouring various colors of pulverized glass into a clay mold and using a cassava stem for the bead's hole. The mold is placed in a furnace and heated until the glass particles blend together without actually melting and the stem burns out.
